Mrs. Donna Marie Skurski has has been a Dance Instructress
for Polish Women's Alliance since September 1975.
Mrs. Skurski earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance-Theater
from Marygrove College,
where she performed with "Dance Detroit", the resident dance
company.
Donna's interest in Polish dance and culture has taken her to
Poland to further her studies in the national and regional folk
dances of Poland. She has studied under the dance masters
themselves, spending several summers in Lublin, Poland. Her vast
knowledge of Polish dance and culture proved to be very beneficial
when she and her husband took charge of the
Wawel Folk Ensamble.
The troupe has participated in dance workshops in various cities
in the United States and also in the World Folk Festival in Rzeszow,
Poland in 1980, 1983, 1989, 1996, 1999, 2005 and 2008. The troupe is looking forward to going back in the summer of 2011.
Donna has received numerous awards for her outstanding achievements
in dance and her contributions to the Polish Community.
In April of 2002, Donna was recognized by the
Warren Cultural Commission, and received the Fine Arts Award in
Dance.
In October of 2003, she and her husband, Tom, received the
Polish Heritage Award given annually by the Polish
Heritage committee of St. Hyacinth's Parish.
The Central Citizens Committee awarded her the Kosciusko Medal
in October of 1996 in recognition of her contributions to Polonia
and the preservation of Polish culture.
Since 1994, Donna has served on the Board of Directors of the
Polish Folk Dance Association of the Americas,
for six years as Secretary, and is currently serving as Treasurer.
Currently, she is a substitute Elementary School Teacher in the
Roseville and St. Clair Shores school districts.
